1 Hour Photo Victoria Collective

This will be short. So was the event it is about though, so maybe that’s appropriate. This is about the birth of the 1 Hour Photo Victoria Collective. An ad hoc group of street photographers that came together for the first time on April 23rd, 2022 to walk around downtown Victoria and take some pictures.

Sponsor Message: Citified is the most comprehensive resource for researching a new-build home or commercial space in metro Victoria and southern Vancouver Island.

The birth of this collective was truly the vision of Colin Newell, a great local street photographer who I met in-person for the first time at the beginning of the shoot. That said, we had been chatting regularly through the pandemic on making sure that when we could, we would come together to shoot a roll.

The group will hopefully be having another get together soon and I am looking forward to it. I think the key is that is not exclusionary at all. You just have to want to shoot street photography, whether digital or analog. It is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to feel a little less self-conscious when they’re out with their camera, because you have another person with their camera out right next to you.

For this first shoot, Colin and I went off as a pair together and circled through Old Town and Chinatown. One of the highlights was happening upon the John Fluevog shoe sale which had a plethora of willing subjects, all with amazing footwear.

Colin has also started to build a website for the group which you can see here. You can also follow along on Instagram by searching the hashtag #1hourphotoyyj.

If you have any questions about joining one in the future, feel free to connect with me.

Below are some of the shots that came out of the hour that I am pretty happy with. I was shooting my Nikon FE with Fomapan 200 for the first while and switched at the end to my Fuji XT2 for some digital shots.

Would love to hear your comments on the photos and the idea behind the collective. Let me know!

Colin Newell doing our thing.
