Two Great Art Shows Coming to Victoria!
Just a short article today to let you know about a couple of amazing art events at two of my favourite creative spaces in town.
First, a couple of years ago I wrote about the surprising and exceptional artist collective at the Rockslide Gallery. Well, a couple of times a year, all of the artists there, open up their studios to viewings. There is usually a DJ or two and a bar. The amazing part for me, apart from getting to see an stunning array of excellent art, is that you get to meet all of the artists and talk with them about what they do. You can read the article I wrote on the Rockslide Gallery here. The feeling of creativity in the air as you walk around the gallery is amazing and uplifting.
So if you have never been to the Rockslide Gallery to experience one of their open houses, you are in luck because this Saturday, October 11th from 2pm to 8pm the whole building is open (with a donation for entry) for you to walk around and enjoy. Maybe I will see you there.
The second event is also an art show of sorts, though a very different kind. About a year ago, I visited the Monkey C Artcade on Fort Street and wrote an article about it. You can read that here. One of the amazing things I saw there was a room filled with not quite grotesque creatures, but certainly somewhat unnerving. These had been left over apparently, from their Halloween show, which I had missed.
Luckily, this year I have been given some advance warning that the Artcade has a new Halloween focused show coming up. The “Cult of Cute Catastrophes” as it is titled, is an expanded, interactive exhibition inspired by Halloween. The installation apparently breaks the mold of a traditional seasonal show by omitting standard scares such as witches, ghouls, or jump scares often found in some of the haunted houses that you can find around the city at the end of the month. Monkey C Interactive have instead envisioned a setting where “science has gone wild”, and creative impulses have led to the ignoring safety rules in the path towards experiments. The show starts on October 22nd and runs until November 2nd. The Artcade is open from 2:00pm - 10:00pm Wednesdays to Sundays. Admission to this exhibit is $15, though I am sure that will be a bargain given how amazing the place is on just a regular day.
Are you planning on attending either of these events or are you going to be going to another one around the city? Let me know about it in the comments!
