Flic Film’s New Street Savvy 400

As promised a couple of months ago, here is my review of the Street Candy Street Savvy 400 sold by Flic Film. Yes that is a mouthful… This is one of two colour films sold by Flic Film under the Street Candy label. Street Candy used to be its own little film company, but Flic Film bought them out last year and still sells it under their old name. Which, as I said, leads to a pretty long name. The other colour film sold under the Street Candy label is the Psychedelic Street 400. I reviewed that last time, you can read the article here. I was less than impressed with that film stock and so I was a little concerned about shooting the Street Savvy. Luckily, it is the complete opposite of that film.

The first question that comes up with a new film product like this is, what kind of film is it actually. Very few companies make film anymore. Most companies like Flic Film are purchasing film from one of those small companies in bulk and then professionally rerolling it into cannisters. That is the case with Street Savvy 400 which is almost certainly a Kodak 400 film. There are some suggestions online that it is the same version of Kodak film that is being used for Fujifilm 400 (yes, sadly Fujifilm is respooling Kodak film too…). I am not certain about this because most of the film that Kodak has been selling for respooling is film that is primarily for some niche purpose such as Aerocolor IV which was originally produced for aerial photography. Still, I would be very surprised if it wasn’t some form of Kodak film. The second question that comes up is whether it is any good? And the short answer is yes.

I would say that this is excellent standard 400 ISO film. I really like the way the film brings out the colours. There were no weird light artifacts that you sometimes get with Aerocolor IV film. It just feels like a solid, everyday shooting colour film. So far I have shot two rolls and I have attached some samples from each roll below. If you normally shoot Kodak Gold or Ultramax and you want to try another standard film as an alternative, Street Savvy is a good option. If you are wanting to get yourself some to try out, Camera Traders in Market Square has been stocking it. Let me know what you think about this film in the comments. If you have tried it out yourself, let me know your opinion on it.
